Aanaya nayanar was one of the 63 nayanmars who were ardent devotees of Lord Shiva, one of the main deities in the Hindu trinity.
Aanaya nayanar used the Siva panchakshara (5 syllables) as the musical notes instead of the conventional system of using seven notes in the arohanam (ascending order) and avarohanam (descending order) of the raga creation while singing in praise of Lord Shiva.
