Lord Shiva is one of the
main Gods in the Hindu Trinity. The other two being Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu.
The people who worship
Lord Shiva are called Saivaites. All their path or religion is called "Saivam".
The ardent devotees
of Lord Shiva hailing from Tamilnadu in South India are called "Nayanmaars". The
meaning of the term "Nayanmaar" is those who have Lord Shiva as their Lord and
master. There are 63 Nayanmaars of which Saint Thirunavukkarasar was one. He is
an apostle of Saivam and Lord Shiva.
Thirunavukkarasar
popularly known as "Appar" was a great Saivite saint of third century. His approach
to Lord Shiva was of "Dasa bhavam", the attitude of an obedient servant.
With
his 'uzhavaarapadai" (metal device) he would clean the shrubs in the temples for
the safety of devotees.
He lived a long life of 80 years. The compilation of his songs is in the book
"Devaram". |
